Red Pepper Spectacle Arts Celebrates the 27th Annual Kensington Market Winter Solstice
Kensington Market Winter Solstice is a non-profit, hand-made, commercial free festival!
Unite to ignite the longest, darkest night of the year to celebrate the return of the sun! Celebrate the Solstice community-style in a luminescent lantern-lit procession through Toronto’s historic Kensington Market. See theatrical scenarios, a myriad of performers and giant puppets, and the fiery finale at Alexandra Park just behind Scadding Court (Bathurst and Dundas). It all starts at 6:30PM on December 21st at Oxford and Augusta (just south of College)!
In collaboration with local community members and performers including host Rosina Kazi of LAL, Samba Squad, Shadowland Youth Theatre, Native Men’s Residence, Richard Underhill & the Kensington Horns, Maracatu Mar Aberto, Kazoo Clowns, Spiritwind, Eagle Woman Singers, Hand Drummer Isaiah Cada, A-Rhythmics, Befana Hag Choir, The Solsticks, Jenni-Lea & Circle Sing, New Model Circus Army, and many more.
In preparation for December 21, don’t forget to join us for our Annual Lantern Making workshop happening Sunday, December 18, from 11AM– 6PM at the United Steelworkers Hall located at 25 Cecil Street. Open to everyone of all skill levels, Lantern Making is $12 dollars per person. Materials and instruction provided. Venue is wheelchair accessible
There are many ways to get involved in this years celebration including: volunteering/assisting in creation of the fire sculpture and puppeteering, marching in our parade, participate in a lantern workshop, spreading the word with your networks and donating to make this year’s event a community success! Red Pepper Spectacle Arts kindly acknowledges our current sponsors: Kensington Market BIA, City of Toronto (City Councillor, Joe Cressy, Ward 20), Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, Kensington Market Lofts, Kensington Market Merchants and Residents and Company Artists.
